Artist Review: Billie Eilish

The 19-year-old, on-the-rise dynamo singer-songwriter Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell (who goes by her stage name “Billie Eilish”) has had a tremendous effect on everyone, from pre-teens to adults all over the world. She has become one of the youngest pop artists of 2019 according to brokenstereo.medium.com (the list includes other pop artists such as mxmtoon, Ruel, Olivia O’Brien, King Princess, and Noah Cyrus). How did her ascent to fame become worldwide? It all started when she was thirteen years old; she recorded her first music video and hit single, “Ocean Eyes” written by her singer-songwriter older brother, Finneas O’ Connell (who goes by his stage name Finneas and can be found on Spotify and other music programs).
On August 11, 2017, she released her first official album, “Don’t Smile At Me”. The release of these seven singles proved to be a success in her rising music career, resulting in it being boosted by miles. “Ocean Eyes” (written in 2016) and “idontwannabeyouanymore” (written in 2017) were both popular hits charting in the top 100 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. By March of 2019, she soon released her newest and latest album, “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” This album includes fourteen tracks such as ilomilo, Bad Guy, when the party’s over, My Strange Addiction, 8, and many more. Eilish is mostly known for her tomboy style of clothing (which includes baggy sweatsuits, bold prints, and “loud” accessories, which has sparked a trend in Gen Z’s fashion lifestyle), her ominous and eerie music style, and iconic black and green hair. Here are four of her newest singles; No Time to Die, everything I wanted, My Future, and Therefore I Am, which were all released in 2020.
Why is Billie Eilish Important to GMS’s Community?
Eilish includes important meanings and lessons in her music that are translated and altered into creepy-like metaphors. Even though she’s still so young, she’s well educated and knows what is right and wrong. Some adults look down at Billie as a bad influence because of the music she produces and her wardrobe choices, however, she is more than that. She’s made music to bring awareness to situations such as global warming, peer pressure, dealing with flooding emotions, growing as a teenager in the 21st century, and so much more. Although Billie Eilish has brought attention to so many important issues and inspired young minds to do the same, to get together and fight together, because that doesn’t stop a young generation from changing the world.

Lana Noredin is a 7th grader at Glasgow Middle school. Her family is originally from Sudan but her and all of her siblings were born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Falls Church, VA. Some of her talents are drawing, painting, and rollerskating. Some things she likes to do for fun are play video games, watch anime, read, and listen to music. Some of her favorite artists are Mother Mother, Beach Bunny, Cavetown, Arctic Monkeys, Babymetal, and Jack Stauber. She had two cats, but one passed away unfortunately. Although she can roller skate, she can’t ice skate or knows how to ride a skateboard.
Misha Speede is an 8th grader in Glasgow Middle School. She is currently growing up in a very diverse and multicultural family; her mother is Chinese and she is African American. She can speak Cantonese and Mandarin, and she really enjoys eating all of the Chinese delicacies. Besides speaking three languages, she also enjoys writing, especially poetry and fantasy. She also really like reading, if she could live in a book fandom, she would live at Camp Half Blood. She is also in orchestra at Glasgow, and she plays the violin.
