Diversity at Glasgow

January 11, 2021
If you’re looking to find diversity, you’ve come to the right place. Glasgow is not only the most populated middle school in Virginia, but it’s also one of the most diverse schools in Virginia. Here at Glasgow, students come from various backgrounds. They come from different countries, speak different languages, and practice different religions. Glasgow embraces the diversity that it has and is proud to have so many students from so many different backgrounds.
Here is the data from the survey that 196 students filled out:
From the 196 students that filled out this survey, 33.7% (66) said that they don’t speak a language other than English, while 66.3% (130) said that they do. There are about 40 languages being spoken and 11 religions being practiced by the students that answered this survey. Additionally, 22 of the students who took this survey were not born in America. There were 19 different countries that those students are from. Here are the list of countries and the number of students that were born there:
- Afghanistan – 5
- Argentina – 1
- Bangladesh – 1
- Bolivia – 4
- Egypt – 2
- El Salvador – 2
- Ethiopia – 4
- Greece – 1
- Guatemala – 1
- Honduras – 1
- Italy – 1
- Mexico – 1
- Morocco – 2
- Nepal – 1
- Pakistan – 1
- Saudi Arabia – 2
- Slovenia – 1
- Sudan – 3
- Syria – 1
As you can see, Glasgow has an extremely diverse community, and that was only within 196 students out of the 2000 students that make up Glasgow’s population. Glasgow is constantly teaching and learning about different backgrounds, cultures, heritages, etc. It’s delighted with the amount of diversity there is and is always looking to see more. What’s your opinion on diversity? What does it mean to you?
