Dear Riley,
I recently became a part of the school’s theater production of Annie, but I’m so stressed out now. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a part of this and hanging out with everyone. It’s just that rehearsals are everyday afterschool except Tuesdays and Sundays. It’s a lot and I feel like it’s taking up a lot of time. What should I do? I really don’t want to quit but I’m super torn. Help!
Sincerely,
Torn Theater Teen
Dear Torn Theater Teen,
It’s okay to feel all that stress. I mean, I feel it too. What helps me is just when I get home, I take time for myself, put on some music, take a shower whatever you need to do to just calm yourself down. I will also say the theater schedule is a bit chaotic but you’ll get used to it. If you don’t, consider working something out with Ms. Smits and seeing if you can come on some days. Currently, I’m in four clubs (journalism being my main priority, of course), so I have to schedule and plan a lot, but it definitely helps to write everything down and to give yourself due dates to keep on top of everything. However, make sure that you take time to yourself. These due dates are tentative so don’t beat down on yourself if you don’t get to everything. Clearly, my very type A personality is a blessing in this case, but just remember that you do theater because you love it, and enjoy making connections. Never lose sight of that, and you will always be able to push through.
Wow, I even surprised myself with that last line. I sounded like a younger and more beautiful Yoda :).
Anyway, let me know how it goes.
May the force be with you,
Riley
